Think green, live better project/summary description
"Think green, live better" is a sustainable social entrepreneurship and active citizenship project that began in the 2021/2022 school year with the 8th E class, then continued in 2022/2023 with 9th E, in 2023/2024 with 10thA and 8th D; in the 2024/2025 school year 9thD and 11thA and this school year 12thA and B, 10thA and 7thF, from the Dr Jaime Magalhães Lima Primary and Secondary School (EBSJML). All stages of the project and activities are documented in photographs and videos. These students, concerned about the impact of climate change, built a tree nursery with the aim of minimising global warming by sequestering carbon, reducing temperatures and air pollution (especially in urban areas) and also making a significant contribution to the well-being of local citizens and beautifying the landscape. This project is also an excellent opportunity for children and young people from more urban environments to get to know some forest species and, above all, to get in touch with the land. Therefore, as well as making the school community (and by extension the rest of society) aware of the importance of environmentally sustainable behaviour to mitigate the effects of climate change, these students develop habits of active citizenship and awareness of environmental problems. The project is aimed at developing activities that awaken the interest of the educational community in the subject of climate change in a constructive, enterprising, creative and fun way. They built a giant drop in the multipurpose room with a net in which to place the inorganic materials that are scattered around the school in order to create an impact and awaken the right attitudes. They started the project by tidying up and transforming the project's workspace at the school, always using the concept of the circular economy, everything they use are materials from the school that they integrate and transform; establishing partnerships and interacting with the various stakeholders 15 at the moment: EBSJML, logistical support and visibility; Jaime Magalhães Lima School Parents' Association, support with materials; Esgueira Parish Council, providing the Fonte do Meio Park site for transplanting trees and visibility; RAÍZ - Quinta de S. Francisco in Eixo, seeds and trees. Francisco in Eixo, seeds and trees; Siro, supply of substrate; Bemol, a hygiene and cleaning company, donation of pallets; Rio Novo do Príncipe School Group, donation of trees; Danfil - Digital Printing Centre, donation of billboards; Leroy, donation of a shelter to store the project's tools and materials; ICNF, donation of seeds and lecture; Quercus, lectures; Veolia, lecture on composting and donation of pallets; Movimento Gaio, donation of land to place 250 native trees; Lifeterra/University of Aveiro, bus and contacts to plant trees in Cabeço Santo; Cabeço Santo Association, donation of land to plant 300 native trees; fulfilling the various objectives set; collecting seeds, placing them in everyday packages collected by the students, juice, milk, water, etc. (students from pre-school to secondary school take part in the project) and jugs collected at school from the educational community, which are then cut up and used as pots in which substrate is placed to transplant trees. They have already transplanted 346 native trees at EBSJML, Parque da Fonte do Meio, Quinta de S. Francisco in Eixo (Raíz) and Serra da Freita. Of the 319 seeds planted by the project's pre-school and primary school students, 141 native trees have taken root and are ready to be transplanted.
We have around 1,000 trees in the project, including those born and lent by Raíz and the Rio Novo do Príncipe School Group.
In the 2023/2024 school year, they transplanted 75 native trees, transporting them in bottles that had been collected, cut and pierced so that they could be watered, at Raiz - Instituto de Investigação da Floresta e Papel, at EBSJML and Parque da Fonte do Meio, established partnerships. This school year they have already transplanted 6 at EBSJML and planted around 200 at Cabeço Santo. The team currently has 17 teachers, 121 students and 5 classes.

The project:
Its ultimate aim is to raise awareness, motivate behaviour towards ecological preservation and the fight against climate change, encourage changes in the attitudes and behaviour of children and young people, guiding them towards preserving life on Earth and improving the quality of life in the present and in the future.
So far, the overall assessment of the project is very positive, in that not only have the students become aware of the importance of trees, but they are also having the opportunity to publicise the project, raising awareness and alerting the whole community to the importance of environmental preservation.
The development of this project has also enabled a global approach between institutions to promote sustainability in the region, the establishment of local partnerships to increase the exercise of practices compatible with sustainable development.
Impacts
per year
