The University of the Algarve's shared bicycle system (Eco-bike) was funded by the Environmental Fund and has been in operation since 2020. It contributes to soft mobility, promoting a healthy, low-carbon society based on sustainable behaviour models. It has more than 100 bikes and has been adapting to growing demand. The bikes are loaned out for periods of up to six months, which are renewable, and the borrower is responsible for their upkeep during the loan period.
Since implementation, the number of journeys made to the university by bicycle has doubled, reducing CO2 eq. emissions by 240 tonnes/year, out of a total of 24,000 t CO2 eq./year due to mobility at the university.
It works in partnership with Agrupamento de Escolas Pinheiro e Rosa's BikeMe project by supporting vocational workshops and supplying parts. The university's bicycles are repaired by the Workshop's students.
