Since 2022, the SOS Animal Sanctuary (27 ha) has been running an ongoing ecological restoration programme: >15,000 native trees and shrubs planted (e.g. Quercus suber, Q. ilex, Q. faginea, Arbutus unedo, Laurus nobilis, Myrtus communis; in riparian galleries Salix atrocinerea, Populus alba, Fraxinus angustifolia). With Open Rivers' support, we removed an obsolete barrier in the Perofilho stream and in November we plan to remove the second one, restoring river connectivity and habitats. The fauna is returning: European otter (Lutra lutra), genet (Genetta genetta), redshank (Herpestes ichneumon), badger (Meles meles), fox (Vulpes vulpes), hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus); avifauna such as herons (Ardea cinerea, Egretta garzetta), kites (Milvus migrans, M. milvus) and strigidae (Tyto alba, Athene noctua, Strix aluco). We implement invasive control, mulching, rainwater/grey water irrigation, ecological corridors and micro-habitats, with guided tours and environmental education.
