R23 - Co-creation of an intervention to increase take-up of school canteens in the 2nd and 3rd cycles of basic education

#Benavente #Outro
School meals help to promote healthy and sustainable eating. However, from the 2nd cycle onwards, pupils' adherence to the canteen is modest. The main aim of the R23 project was to increase the take-up of the school canteen and satisfaction with lunch among 2nd and 3rd cycle pupils in Benavente schools. It also aimed to identify the factors that influence the choice to eat lunch in the canteen and to study the associations between canteen membership and sociodemographic, economic and anthropometric data and adherence to the Mediterranean Dietary Pattern (MAP). The multi-component intervention, based on co-creation, promoted changes in the meal service, the canteen's food environment and the menu. With the mobilisation of the school community, the project achieved a significant 23% increase in canteen membership and a 21% reduction in food waste, indicating an increase in satisfaction.
