Through the Theatre of the Oppressed, the MUDARTE project aims to train 7th graders from schools in the municipality of Cascais to identify situations of oppression and to intervene assertively in the face of them. A study carried out by the municipality in 2010 revealed high rates of violence among young people and we felt it urgent to act on this problem by encouraging young people to adopt behaviours that reflect assertive attitudes and values and mutual respect, building healthy connections that are free from abuse and violence. By including young people in the reflection, discussion and action against all forms of violence, creating spaces for new voices and emerging actors, we hope that the project participants will not only experience change in the first person, but will also raise awareness and change attitudes and behaviour in relation to issues of violence among peers, family members and teachers.
