In the context of the Eco-School Organic Gardens programme, with the aim of supporting and promoting the growing interest in creating organic gardens, this project aims to encourage the use of schools' outdoor spaces to grow educational gardens, following the principles of sustainable agriculture. The project not only emphasises the importance of healthy eating and responsible use of the soil, but also provides an educational approach to various topics in the school curriculum. Since its launch in 2012 by the Eco-Schools initiative, this project has gained popularity among schools. In 2022, Escola Básica da Carvoeira, located in the municipality of Mafra, was awarded first place in the "Segredos da Horta" challenge. The vegetable garden at Escola Básica nº 1 da Venda do Pinheiro was awarded an "Honourable Mention" in the Hortas Bio 2024-2025 challenge.
