Forest gardens

#Mértola #Associação
"The forest garden is a living laboratory that encourages autonomous observation of nature, in which the children plant, care for, harvest and eat the result of their cultivation. Students don't just learn how to make a garden, they learn how to tackle and reverse the environmental impacts of our society. This is an opportunity to promote education in the service of developing sustainable human communities." (in Life in Syntropy.org) Problem: Food production combined with regenerative practices, restoring ecosystems, conveying a new vision of sustainability, self-sufficiency, consumption and conscious use of water in a semi-arid context. Direct and indirect beneficiaries: 5 primary schools in the Municipality of Mértola as a Curricular Enrichment Activity (AEC) for the 1st cycle, developed at C Educ Algodôr, C Educ Mina de São Domingos, C Educ Santana de Cambas, C Educ S. Miguel do Pinheiro and C Educ Penilhos promoted by the Municipality of Mértola and implemented by Ass.Terra Sintrópica. Each year, between 70 and 90 children, 7 teachers and 5 educational assistants, volunteers from the Association, benefit directly. Indirectly, families and tutors, visitors and technicians from other activities benefit. Solution: Regeneration through use is only possible with ecological knowledge combined with techniques that are capable of synchronising food production with the successional dynamics of ecosystems. Through the concepts of syntropic agriculture, we can work on competences that go beyond theoretical and technical skills.
