Mission: To preserve the legacy of large trees.

Green Giants is VERDE's first project. Our association's primary mission is the preservation and regeneration of large trees. The project is based on three main premises: Know, Involve and Value.

In Lousada, a town in the district of Porto, located in the north of Portugal, we have so far known and studied 7400 giant trees, which as they grow provide ecosystem services that are essential to life: They sequester carbon while producing oxygen; They remove pollutants from the air while cooling the soil with their shade; They prevent floods while helping to fill aquifers; They harbour hundreds of living beings themselves, such as birds, insects, plants and fungi. They do all this every day, simultaneously, just as they have done for the last tens or hundreds of years during which they have lived and grown. Since 2017, more than 450 have disappeared in Lousada.
