In Carcavelos, a small 200 square metre area has been transformed into a Miyawaki forest, thanks to the collective effort of over 60 volunteers. This project has successfully planted more than 600 plants from over 30 native species, aiming to reintroduce natural ecosystems into urban areas. The Miyawaki method, known for creating dense and self-sustaining forests quickly, has been utilised here to foster biodiversity and offer a green space within the city. This forest is not just about adding greenery; it's part of a larger goal to reconnect people with nature and bring the benefits of natural environments back into urban life. By increasing local biodiversity and providing a cooler area in the city, the forest helps combat the urban heat island effect. The initiative demonstrates the significant impact that community-driven environmental projects can have in making cities more livable and sustainable by integrating nature into urban planning.
