FertiAlte - Alte Composting Unit, is a project organised by the Escola Profissional de Alte (Alte Vocational School), which aims to set up a pilot community aerobic composting unit in the village of Alte - Loulé, to collect organic waste from the community with the overall aim of promoting the circular economy and improving sustainability. Community composting has emerged as a solution for the local treatment of bio-waste, reducing landfill resources, promoting the reduction of methane and improving sustainability. Composting is a natural process of decomposition of organic matter by the action of microorganisms (such as bacteria and fungi) in the presence of oxygen. Composting is a simple and effective waste recovery technique, resulting in a nutrient-rich material that can be used as an organic fertiliser.
