Created with the aim of responding to the problems of discrimination and violence in the north of the country and the lack of services specifically aimed at lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex (LGBTI) victims, the Gis Centre was set up in January 2017 as a structured response funded by the Portuguese government. Currently the only facility in the north of the country to guarantee free and specialised support for LGBTI victims of domestic violence, the Gis Centre is part of the National Support Network for Victims of Domestic Violence and provides psychological, social and medical support, legal advice, training and consultancy, as well as 24-hour telephone assistance.
