This is a symbol of environmental quality awarded annually, honouring the efforts of entities working to make it possible for local development to coexist with respect for the environment, and raising awareness among citizens in general and decision-makers in particular of the need to protect the environment. There are four essential points for obtaining the award: water quality and space (planning), safety and services, surveillance and raising awareness among people (environmental education). Both beaches of Foz do Arelho, Praia do Mar and Praia da Lagoa, were awarded the Blue Flag symbol.
