After almost 20 years of experience in the selective collection of bio-waste from large producers (markets, schools, restaurants, fruit shops, canteens), Amadora City Council has extended this collection to the domestic sector by installing 30 specific containers on public roads.
In a pilot phase, the system of separating food waste into containers with conditioned access was implemented in the Serra das Brancas Urbanisation, in the parish of Mina de Água, in the Bairro do Borel and Casas do Lago Urbanisations, in the parish of Venteira, and in the Bairro do Alto dos Moinhos, in the parish of Alfragide.
The waste collected is transported and delivered to Valorsul's Organic Treatment and Recovery Plant. There, the waste is subjected to appropriate treatment through an anaerobic digestion process, transformed into compost for use in agriculture and the production of electricity.
