Reflecting the current and future challenges facing the Municipality of Matosinhos in terms of proper waste management, composting highlights the importance of structuring and implementing waste management that prioritises waste prevention, encouraging participation and environmental citizenship, guaranteeing the optimisation and efficiency of waste collection, and promoting the principles of a circular economy. The Composta - Compostagem Caseira e Comunitária project, which is part of the municipality's waste management and recovery strategy, aims to treat bio-waste at the place of production, emphasising the role of citizens as agents of change and active players in reintroducing waste into the value chain.
